Happiness !

It was 9 in the Night .He was returning back from his office. He reached his home and rested for a while thinking about the day.He had been busy since morning attending meetings, calls & speaking to his employees. Aditya was the CEO of Varma Group of Industries ,a position which he had taken charge after his father's demise.Being a Graduate from Harvard ,he had plenty of knowledge and experience to run the company.A Business tycoon who had made it to the Forbes List ,workaholic who was busy all days of the week. The only thing he felt he lacked was happiness.People usually mistake happiness with money, power, position or fame, he thought. He had everything but he wasn't happy. The incident that happened the previous day had made him think this.Since many years, there was a Chaiwala who used to get Tea to their company during break time. As usual Aditya was expecting Tea during the morning break. It was Ten minutes and the Chaiwala hadn't arrived.Suddenly there was a knock on the door.A small boy, maybe around 12 years old was in front of him with the tea.He was cheerful with a smile on his face.Humming a tune with no worries on his face, the boy seemed pretty happy. The boy said that he was the Chaiwala's grandson and his name was Raj .Aditya felt pity on the boy and told the boy he must be studying rather than doing work. The boy replied that he goes to school, since it was a holiday and his Grandfather was not feeling well, he had come. After drinking the tea ,Aditya took pity on the boy and gave him a Rs 100 note thinking that the boy would be happy. The boy kindly refused the money and told him to pay only Rs 10 which was the amount to be paid. Aditya was dumbstruck by the boy's honesty and humbleness. He told the boy that he could buy whatever he wants to with it and it was a gift. The boy refused again & replied Rs 10 was sufficient enough for him to be happy. He could still buy a pencil, chocolate & a paan for his grandpa which would make not only him but also his Grandpa happy. For a moment, Aditya realised what the boy told was right.Money wasn't everything. There are other things which make you happy. The small things, maybe a Cup of Coffee when you are down ,the smell of the first rain, speaking to your friend,The Morning dew,Reading a Good book,Spending time with your loved ones,A long drive or other small things which he hadn't considered important. He felt he needed to give importance to those small things daily which mattered the most. It reminded him of John Lennon's quote that he had read long back " When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’.They told me I didn't understand the assignment, and I told them they didn't understand life ".

Things that changed the World.

Imagine a World without Google or a Mobile phone .How would our lives have been ?There are various such things which have changed this world. Its hard to list all of them.Below I list 5 things that i feel have made the most impact.Things that have taken this world into a new dimension in the past few decades.
1)Transport :Ages back it would take months for a man to travel from one place to another. With the invention of the ship by the Egyptians ,man began to explore new places and expand trade with other countries. This was a major source of transport used by the Egyptians ,Romans and other civilizations. With the introduction of railways in the mid 1800's most of the cities were connected .But it was in the late 1800's century when Karl Benz and Henry Ford revolutionized the automobile sector, the transport system went through a major change. And later with the invention of Aeroplane by the Wright Brothers ,today it is possible to visit cities in various countries within hours. And today with the advance of technology the concept of Space tourism is gaining popularity. We may not be surprised if a visit to the Moon/Mars is made possible as a part of space tourism .Undoubtedly transport system has undergone a lot of changes in the last few decades and made a huge impact.
2)Computer :The invention of analytical engine by Charles Babbage earned him the title Father of Computers. It used the punched card technology. And from then on various changes have taken place .ENIAC was the first electronic based computer. It was the size of an entire room and weighed 27 tonnes. It used vacuum tubes. And then in the 1950s the use of transistors reduced the size of the computers drastically. With the introduction of IC's the computers were revolutionized and made available to the common man .Today computer has become a basic need .It is used in the field of education, business, science,Banks,Weather analysis etc. From the size of a room to the size that can fit on a lap, Computer has indeed been one of the things that has changed this world.
3)Internet:The invention of computer was a boon to the mankind. But without Internet ,computers would not have been this popular they are today. There has been no single person credited with the invention of Internet.DARPA,Berners Lee,Klienrock all have equally contributed to the development of Internet.Internet is used for Business, trade,Social Networking,Email, etc. It is not possible for me to post this without the Internet.Internet has made the concept of universal brotherhood come true. With the introduction of OCW,NPTEL,MITx,Khan academy etc education has not been restricted to a particular individual or a country thus making Internet a default choice to my list.
4)Mobile Phones : When Jyoti Basu made the first mobile call in 1995, Mobile phones were affordable only to the rich. The first cost tariff was 16Rs per minute. There were only 5 million subscribers in the first 6 years. And  today there are around 929 million mobile subscribers. With the number of service providers increasing everyday ,the call rates have reduced to paisas/min.And with the advent of technology Internet is easily accessible through mobile phones.Various other features such as Gps,Games,Media Player,Camera,Mobile Banking,Booking cinema tickets etc have made Mobile Phones popular..This evolution of Mobile phones have definitely changed the world making anything available at our fingertips.
5) Indian Politics and the Arab Spring:
There have been a lot of changes in Indian Politics since a few decadesThe INC that comprised of Mahatma Gandhi,Nehru,Abul kalam Azad ,Vallabhai Patel etc has never been the same.Today TIME magazine has rated our Prime Minister as the  Underachiever.Scams,Corrupt Politicians & Goons -This is what the present day politics is about. The second thing that i would like to mention is the Arab spring or the Arab uprising that began in Tunisia in 2010 .This uprising had spread to other Arab countries i.e Egypt,Libya ,Yemen,Jordan to name a few of them. These protests have led to the downfall of Ben Ali,Hosni Mubarak,Gaddafi etc who had been ruling their countries for decades. These events which led to a national uprising made the government to make certain policy changes.2 other events I would like to mention are :The protest for the implementation of Jan Lokpal Bill in India and the Wikileaks movement started by Julian Assange .
These are the 5 major things which according to me have changed this world in the past few decades.Cinema,Sports,Media,Journalism are the other things that have also caused a huge impact.

Reward or Punishment ?

I thought of posting this after I recently happened to visit an Old Age Home. An old lady who was staying in my Neighbour's place  had been shifted to an Old age home few months back .She had no husband nor children .It was her desire to join the old age home as she could find some company during her last days. A few days back we got the news that the lady had passed away .So me and my family visited the Old Age home. For all those who are not happy or satisfied with their lives ,a visit here is a must.It was noon. The place was very quiet.I saw about thirty Old aged People who were waiting for their lunch. One could see the kindness and patience in their eyes. Aura was surrounding their faces .They truly din't deserve this .This was the reward/punishment they had got for taking care and sacrificing everything for their children. At one moment,i thought how inconsiderate those children must have been to forget what their parents had done for them.Even though the inmates found good company ,they surely missed their children .I eventually spoke to some of them .They said their children were too busy or dint bother about them. There was one lady who told her son had got her fish curry for the lunch.I still wonder why the person had admitted his mother to an Old age home if he was really concerned about her. However It is the choice of an individual to live the way he wants .But definitely one must not forget what their parents have done for them. What we do is what we get ,our present actions decide our future. So what I personally feel is children must definetly think twice before taking such a decision.

My 1st Sem Environmental Science Project :

MANGALORE :A NATURAL HEAVEN IN THE PAST BUT NOW A MANMADE HELL

Brief History: Mangalore is also known as “Mangala Puram “(the town of the goddess Mangala Devi) or the “Land of the saint Parashurama “.  According to the legend, The Sahyadri Kanda visualizes that Parashurama threw his axe into the Sea and retrieved as much land as the Axe flew from the King of Sea. A marvelous fantasy that has inspired and mesmerized the coastal folks for hundreds of years. The retrieved coastal land is called ‘Parashurama Srishti’ (creation) or Kshetra (land) Another legend has it that  one of the important protagonist of the Nath  cult Matsvendranath  had arrived at Mangalore with the princess of Kerala ''Premaladevi''. He converted the princess to his cult and named her ''Mangaladevi''. Hence Mangalore gets the name from the goddess .It has been known for its natural and scenic beauties from the past.
Current position: Now, Mangalore is one of the fastest growing cities in India, with a population of more than five lakh.  A district with highest number of educational institutions in the world, paradise for realtor sector, infrastructural hub for some of the most reputed national as well as international institutions and enterprising people.  A town which is always in the news for its cultural diversity is now in the limelight for its various environmental issues.
Environmental issues surrounding Mangalore:

Mangalore is one among the 43 most polluted industrial centers in the country according to the study published recently. It is the most polluted city in Karnataka according to the survey. The study has concluded that those centres with a CEPI score in excess of 70 have been “critically” polluted. Mangalore with a score of 73.68 is in the list of cities that are critically polluted which is a major concern for the environmental activists and nature lovers. The major reason for this is the petrochemical industries surrounding Mangalore. Mrpl, mcf, kiocl are a few industries to name among them.

These are the major contributors to the pollution.

Below mentioned are a few reviews of people on the ill effects of this Environmental Pollution.
§         The Nandini River that flows past Soorinje was teeming with fish ten years ago, says Sundar Shetty (60), a farmer. “But, ever since these companies came, the fish catch has become negligible,” he added.
§         Upendra Hosbet, president of the Parisaraasakta Okkuta, says the fish catch in the Arabian Sea has also come down.

§         Imtiaz Kana, a resident, also said that several residents had developed skin allergies. During the visit of a team of experts from the Ministry of Environment and Forests to the villages around Bajpe on February 3, 2008, several farmers complained that their yield was getting affected adversely owing to the effluent discharge from nearby industries.
Another main environmental issue the city is facing is that related to it’s modernization of roads.
While modern roads are welcomed by the Mangalorean community, the problems associated with these progressive works seem to be endless.
Some of the problems related to this are:

· Primarily due to the concrete blanket and lack of proper drainage system the monsoon rain water fails to seep as groundwater. Moreover since Mangalore is a coastal area the rain water easily flows into the sea converting itself to non-potable salty water.

· While widening the roads several trees which earlier used to serve as shade for pedestrians and also serve as air plant have also been cut -off.

·  In the absence of trees the fertile soil of the land is also getting eroded into the ocean. On the other side even the ocean on account of global warming is encroaching upon the land.

·  Also modification or development is not done in the traditional drainage link as a result; the manholes and drainage system are also constantly blocked by these litters making its purpose useless. The rain water also scatters all the filth in its path making the entire surrounding unhygienic.

In addition to this, the nagarjuna power project, the MSEZ phase 1 expansion are the projects that are being taken up inspite of serious opposition from the environmental activists.

            Solution:

  • Proper drainage system should me made.
  • Proper facility should be made to avoid the accumulation of rain water in the roads resulting to manholes.
  • Waste management system should be undertaken.
  • Waste water treatment should be undertaken before dumping the waste from the industries into the rivers.
  • The poisonous gases which are liberated by the industries should be first purified before letting them into the atmosphere.
  • Unauthorized acquisition of fertile land from the farmers for the sake of building new industries should be stopped.
  • World environment day, earth day, vanamahotsava and other social activities should be encouraged.
  • Rain water harvestment should be undertaken.
  • Inspite of being titled the most polluted city in Karnataka, phase 1 works for the Mangalore special economic zone (MSEZ) are in progress. This should be immediately stopped. The people should join hands with the environmental activists, nature lovers, and other organizations in this regard.

I strongly hope that these measures are undertaken and Mangalore again regains its past natural beauty.

Travelogue 2 :Karkala

The 42 ft Gomateshwara statue
Chaturmukha Basadi that can  be seen
from the hill
The photo session.
Pulling the chariot out
It was the Annual Sports day and all my batchmates were busy preparing for the march past. After practice and lot of preparation our branch did win the march past, and then the celebrations started .As all our batchmates were together and we had no classes ,we decided to go on a trip. After a lot of discussion ,finally our batchmates decided to go to Karkala , a town of historical importance and a pilgrim centre for Jains. It is located at about 10km from our college . It is also a World heritage site listed by the UNESCO. We decided to visit the single stone 42-foot (13 m) Gomateshwara statue ,located at about 1km from the town .This statue of Lord Bahubali was installed at Karkala on February 13, 1432  and is the second tallest in Karnataka .It was around 12 noon when we reached the spot .We then started climbing the hill ,and after a 5 min climb we reached the destination, where the statue was located .It was indeed a very beautiful place, from where one can see the surronding forests ,rivers and the Jain Basadis. There were around 25 of us on the trip. The priest seeing us asked us to pull out the chariot which was in a shed ,for the annual Rathotsava to be held in February .Pulling the chariot under the hot sun left us all tired ,but was a great experience .Then there was a photo session in which all of them took photos with their friends. The hill is a great picnic spot to visit with friends or family .The scenic beauty surrounding the hill attracts everyone. After roaming around the hill for some time ,we left  the place at 2 30.This was a trip that would stay in our minds for a very long time ,as it was the first trip along with our batchmates. The other notable places to visit in Karkala are the Jain basadis and the Lord Venkatramana Temple ,which is also popularly known  as Padutirupathi.
