Travelogue :Somnathpur

Travelling has always been fun.Travelling  on your own is a wonderful experience ,you meet new people ,know their culture ,their lifestyle, make new friends and the list continues.A month ago I had  read a interesting article on Somnathpur ,a small village near Mysore .Having visited all the well known places in and  around Mysore, this time I decided to take the path less travelled .It had  been a couple of days in Mysore ,So today morning I planned to visit Somnathpur .I left at 9 in the morning and reached at around 10 30.Somnathpur is a small village situated at about 35km from Mysore. Somnathpur is well
known for the Prasanna Chennakeshava Temple, one of the three famous and finest representations ofHoysala architecture .This is one of the three Hoysala temples listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.I had forgotten to get my digicam ,so  the 2mp mobile cam was the only option.Somnathpur temple is
designed as a mini universe with scenes carved on the walls including Gods, Goddesses, dancing girls, musicians, gurus and animals like elephants, lions, cows and monkeys. The carvings on the walls are brilliant. No wonder Hoysalas were the best architects in the world.Surprisingly I could see more foreigners than our country men.At once it seemed like they were interested in our history more than us.The gatekeeper told me that the Idols present were not worshiped as a Muslim Invader had them destroyed around 8 centuries ago.The carvings on the ceilings are also marvellous. After spending a hour and a half I left for Talakad . The temple is definitely worth a visit .( A few pics of the temple  I had captured  )
